Two bagel shops spent the summer racing to open on the same few blocks of downtown Bethesda. One opened on Monday. The other had already announced its second delay.
Bethesda's summer openings and delays include businesses with existing DMV locations as well as newcomers whose openings are still in progress.
Two Bagel Shops, One Finish Line
Call Your Mother opened its permanent Bethesda location on Monday at 4828 St. Elmo Avenue in the Woodmont Triangle, ending a wait that started back in January when the bagel shop first announced its return to the neighborhood. Down the street, PopUp Bagels has now missed its own opening twice. The Connecticut-based chain first told Bethesda Today it would open July 24, pushed that back to August 7 after a construction timeline change, and then postponed again, with no new date set, according to the same outlet's reporting.
The two shops sit a few blocks apart, one at 7607 Old Georgetown Road on the ground floor of the Solaire apartment building, the other on St. Elmo Avenue. PopUp Bagels had planned a public grand-opening event with a limited Chesapeake Spiced Schmear flavor made for the Bethesda shop specifically. Right now that flavor has nowhere to go.
This is more than a story about cream cheese; it is a snapshot of Bethesda's restaurant openings this summer.
Regional Experience Among New Openings
The summer's openings include businesses with different regional backgrounds. Agora, the Mediterranean restaurant that took over space beneath the Hyatt Regency at One Bethesda Metro Center, welcomed its first dinner guests on July 18. It marks the group's third DMV location, following existing restaurants in Washington and Tysons.
Six Ways to Sunday, the Cantonese-Thai gastropub that opened in May at 8003 Norfolk Avenue, offers another example of a Bethesda opening. Its chef, Satang Ruangsangwatana, spent years cooking on D.C.'s Bar Chinois before running the Fat Nomads food truck in nearby Kensington from 2017 through September 2025. She did not arrive in Bethesda cold. She arrived after building a following ten minutes away.
Compare that to PopUp Bagels, walking into Montgomery County for the first time with no prior Maryland footprint, or to Shake Shack, which as of June was still working through a liquor license hearing before Montgomery County Alcohol Beverage Services, with an opening target of "later this summer," as MoCoShow reported. These examples reflect different opening timelines among Bethesda businesses.
What Twenty Years Bought Mayflower
The turnover works in both directions. Mayflower, a Bethesda restaurant that had operated for more than two decades, closed its doors at 7925 Norfolk Avenue in May. Two decades in one location is a notable run in Bethesda. A restaurant that lasts that long typically survives on repeat customers rather than novelty, which means whatever replaces that address inherits something more specific than square footage. It inherits somebody's standing Tuesday dinner reservation.
That kind of closure is the quiet half of every restaurant-opening headline. The new tenants get the press. The twenty-year run that just ended is the reason there was space available in the first place.
One Town Over
The openings are not confined to Bethesda's zip code. Easy Like Sunday, a Baltimore-based brunch restaurant, opened in late July at 8455 Fenton Street in downtown Silver Spring, in the former home of El Sapo Cuban Social Club, which closed in December 2024. That is a vacancy that just got filled, in a different downtown a few miles up the Purple Line corridor, while Bethesda has added three new dining concepts of its own.
Taken together, the two towns are behaving like a single stretched-out restaurant district rather than two separate markets. If you live in Bethesda and have not made it to Silver Spring's new brunch spot yet, or you live in Silver Spring and have not walked the Woodmont Triangle since spring, the two downtowns are worth treating as one long weekend itinerary rather than a choice between them.
One Week Worth Circling
If you are deciding where to eat between now and Labor Day, one date matters more than any single opening.
Metropolitan Washington Summer Restaurant Week runs Monday, August 24 through Sunday, August 30, with three-course brunch and lunch menus priced at $25 or $35 and dinner menus at $40, $55, or $65 across participating restaurants region-wide. Reservations at any of Bethesda's newer names will book up fastest in the days right before the week starts, not during it.
Bethesda Row's retail mix, meanwhile, keeps leaning further into apparel rather than dining. Johnnie-O opened its first Maryland store there in May, one more data point on the same trend line: the dining energy this summer is concentrated a few blocks north, in the Woodmont Triangle, not on Bethesda Avenue itself.
