Walk Ellsworth Drive on a Saturday night this month and you will find exactly what you expect: string lights, an outdoor screening, a crowd spilling out of the Fillmore. Walk up Georgia Avenue and you will find something the pedestrian mall doesn't have yet. A new Afro fusion lounge in a space that used to be Sky Blue Lounge. A Haitian kitchen serving griot and boulet in a space that used to be Port-au-Prince Haitian Cuisine. Neither one shows up if you only think of Silver Spring's food scene as whatever's happening around Veterans Plaza.
That split is the story this August. Downtown Silver Spring is still doing what it does best, running the civic calendar that pulls people outside. But the restaurant growth that actually changes what you can eat without getting in a car is happening a few blocks away, on a commercial strip that isn't part of the official downtown footprint at all.
What's New on Georgia Avenue
Two openings anchor the case. Vibe Restaurant and Lounge has taken over 8081 Georgia Avenue, the former home of Sky Blue Lounge, with an Afro fusion, Afro futuristic concept led by Nicolette Orji, who goes by Nikki The Jeanius and serves as co-founder, CEO, and chief creative officer. A few blocks down, Chez Aviole is now open at 7912 Georgia Avenue in the space that used to be Port-au-Prince Haitian Cuisine, with a menu built around accra fritters, fried plantains, griot, oxtail, tassot, and boulet.
Neither of these is a chain filling a vacant mall unit. They're independent operators betting on storefronts that already had foot traffic built into the block, one lease at a time, on a corridor that runs parallel to downtown rather than through it.
Ellsworth Place Is Playing a Different Game
Compare that to what's happening around Ellsworth Drive itself. As of last fall, the food court inside Ellsworth Place was positioned to bring in roughly ten new restaurant concepts in a single redevelopment push, the kind of coordinated leasing rollout that happens when one landlord fills one building rather than ten separate operators making ten separate bets. Downtown's own retail tracker lists Chido's Tex-Mex Grill at 931 Ellsworth Drive, near Miss Toya's Creole House, as part of that same wave. Patch has also reported that Roaming Rooster plans a downtown Silver Spring location, which would be its third in Montgomery County.
A few miles east on Columbia Pike, Honeygrow took over the former California Tortilla space at the Shoppes of Burnt Mills with a summer opening planned. That would make it Honeygrow's second Montgomery County location, following the Rockville store that opened back in 2018, which reads like a chain executing a regional rollout schedule rather than a business reading Silver Spring's specific appetite.

Neither approach is better. But if you've been waiting for downtown to feel more distinctive, Georgia Avenue is where that's actually happening right now, while Ellsworth Place fills in with recognizable regional names.
The Plaza Still Runs the Calendar
None of this touches what Veterans Plaza does, which is anchor the weekend regardless of who's cooking nearby. The Freshfarm Farmers Market runs every Saturday in August from 9am to 1pm. Layered on top of that:

- Sunday, August 9 — Jamaica Fest at Veterans Plaza, noon to 9pm, the same night Loe Shimmy plays The Fillmore

- Late August — The Fillmore closes the month with Will Wood on the 23rd, Kail Lowry on the 29th, DOWN on the 30th, and slayr on the 31st
The Fillmore sits inside the arts and entertainment district of Downtown Silver Spring, which is exactly why it keeps pulling that role. It's the one piece of infrastructure Georgia Avenue doesn't have and probably won't get. A concert venue needs the district's zoning, parking, and foot traffic in a way a restaurant storefront doesn't.
Why the Split Matters If You Live Here
Two festivals in the same month at one plaza is a full civic calendar by any measure, and it's happening at the same time the food scene is diversifying somewhere that calendar doesn't reach.
The practical version: if you're planning a Saturday around the farmers market or a concert, downtown still delivers. If you're looking for a restaurant that didn't exist a year ago and won't feel like a chain you've eaten at in three other zip codes, Georgia Avenue is currently the better bet. Neither corridor is waiting on the other, and that's the part worth knowing if you've been assuming Silver Spring's growth is a single story happening in one place.
August is a reasonable month to test both. The plaza calendar is dense enough that you could spend every weekend there through Labor Day. The Georgia Avenue storefronts are new enough that they're still building a regular crowd. Neither will stay this way. Downtown's food court will eventually feel finished, and Georgia Avenue will either fill in further or plateau. Right now, in the first week of August 2026, you can watch both things happen at once, which is a rare enough window that it's worth walking both corridors before one of them stops feeling new.
